Database Driven Solution Makes It Easy for Give2Asia To Post New Projects To Their Site

By Donovan | October 22, 2005

Give2Asia’s projects reflect the priorities and commitments of the donors who make them possible and the grantees in Asia who implement them. These projects, categorized by region, were manually being added to the web site as needed. A labor intensive, tedious process that prevented new projects from quickly being added to the site. And now Give2Asia needed to add 125 new projects to the site. The old hand coded way of doing it was just not efficient or economical.

The Getting Sites Built solution:

Create a MySQL database driven Project Editor which makes it drop dead easy for anyone at Give2Asia to add/edit/delete a project to/from the site, at any time.

How it works:

After logging in to a password protected web page, the user is presented with the option to edit the list of projects. From there, one can do various things, such as add/edit/rename/delete projects by simply filling in a form like the following

Changes made here are automatically reflected on the web site. No HTML coding necessary.

And now that the information for each project is in the database, it’s easy to do other automated things like…

Add a list of all the projects in Pakistan to the Pakistan Earthquake Fund page. With one snippet of code we can have this list generated automatically. And it will also update automatically every time a new project is added to the Pakistan region.

Can your site benefit from this kind of automation as well? You bet it can. Contact us and let us get your site built.

Digital Web Magazine – Dollars & Sense of Web Analytics

By Donovan | October 7, 2005

“As Web developers, designers and marketers, we are quick to make recommendations to improve Web sites. Yes, we can look at anecdotal evidence and say, ‘I did this for another client, and boy did the site take off.’ What’s missing is concrete evidence that substantiates the claim and excludes other influences. This is where Web analytics comes into play.”

By Donovan | October 6, 2005

For years, Summary has been my stats processor of choice for web server log analysis and traffic monitoring. It lives on my computer and I interact with the reports via a web browser. There are over 200 reports by which I can monitor my sites.

Writeboard is live

By Donovan | October 3, 2005

37 Signals does it again! Looking to collaborate on a document via the web? Writeboard looks like the answer.

Writeboard logoWriteboard is a web-based writing tool. It lets you simply write, share, revise, and compare text. With Writeboard you can write solo or collaborate with as many people as you’d like. Writeboard isn’t about heavy text formatting, or WYSIWYG, it’s about the text itself. The words on the page. If you care about design and layout, you’re best bet is to take the finalized text from a writeboard and import it into a page layout program. Make your magic in the right tool.” (Via [SIGNAL VS. Dave’s working on a new module for the OPML Community Server

By Donovan | October 1, 2005

Dave: “I’m working on a new module for the OPML Community Server, and am revisiting a question we answered in Manila and before that in the website framework in Frontier. Should we rely entirely on the physical structure of the data for the URLs, or should we allow the designer to overlay a logical structure, basically rewriting URLs to separate what’s presented to the reader and what the implementor sees. Of course there are tradeoffs…”

As a Manila host and site administrator since around 2000, I can say that I really like being able to construct virtual hierarchies, independent of the underlying structure. It’s a liberating feeling to hack away at the directory structure in a text file. Always back up the file before monkeying around with it of course.

I’m not sure if the module Dave is working on will work like Manila or not but here’s my vote. I hope it works just like Manila handles logical structures.
